Career and Technical Education
CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION IS LEARNING THAT WORKS FOR OREGON
What is CTE?
Career Preparation: CTE programs aim to bridge the gap between traditional academic education and the practical skills required for specific jobs or industries. They often provide real-world training and focus on career readiness.
Wide Range of Fields: CTE covers numerous sectors, including:
Health Sciences (nursing, dental assisting)
Information Technology (software development, network administration)
Skilled Trades (plumbing, welding, construction)
Business and Marketing
Hospitality and Tourism
Agriculture and Environmental Science
Integration with Academic Learning: While CTE programs emphasize practical skills, they are often integrated with core academic subjects like Math, Science, and English. This helps students understand how academic knowledge applies in real-world career contexts.
Hands-on Experience: Many CTE programs include internships, apprenticeships, or partnerships with local businesses, allowing students to gain direct, hands-on experience in their chosen fields.
High School and Beyond: CTE programs are offered at the high school level, as well as in community colleges, technical institutes, and adult education programs. Depending on their career path, students can pursue certifications, Associates degrees, or even transfer to four-year degree programs.
Pathways to Employment: By providing industry-specific skills, CTE programs prepare students to enter the workforce directly after completing the program or continue their education with a strong foundation in their chosen field.

This video highlighting the Baker Technical Institute (BTI) debuted on April 5, 2016
The Baker School District opened the institute in August 2014. It includes career pathways in construction, industrial and engineering systems, health services and agriculture. In addition to its offerings in career and technical education (CTE), the institute emphasizes science and math skills.
The institute was founded on the dual premise of preparing students for the workforce and creating economic development in a small community.
This BTI video is showcasing cutting-edge programs – science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), CTE, the arts and more. The video encourages schools and the public to “dream bigger” about what is possible in Oregon’s schools.
